"The Illustrated Tibetan Book of the Dead" is a classic text of Buddhist religious thought. Translated by an ordained Shingon monk, this book has been written with contemporary readers in mind. The Tibetan Book of the Dead is a Buddhist text written as a guide for those who have passed from this life. It is considered one of the most.

Thurman's translation is interesting to say the least. It's what I read first and I had to unlearn and relearn more traditional terms as I went on (Scientist Deities!!). This book is the first English language translation of the famous Tibetan death text. Also known as the Bardo Thodol which means 'liberation by hearing on the after death plane,' it was originally written in the Tibetan language and is meant to be a guide for those who have died as they transition from their former life to a new destination.

The Tibetan Book of the Dead: Awakening Upon Dying, with introductory commentary by Dzogchen Buddhist master Chögyal Namkhai Norbu, is a new translation of the ancient text also known as The Great Liberation through Hearing in the Intermediate State.
